Maybe it is me, but January has been rough. Work has been super busy. I find myself going into my home office when its dark and when I come out- the house is dark again. I’ve chatted with friends and colleagues and heard a similar story. The winter days are short, dark and in the Pacific Northwest, also wet. It can be easy to sink into the “winter blues.”

To combat my own winter blues I try to keep a routine of activities. It’s important to keep you positive and boost energy. This is where my matcha lattes come in! I was first introduced to these cozy drinks via a youtube video and then my friend Bre gave me some tasty matcha for Christmas. My love for matcha lattes was born. You can search the internet for a variety of different matcha teas, lattes, and warm drinks. I stick to a very simple recipe.

Creating the tea requires a couple important steps. First, you need to put on some hot water to boil. Take some matcha powder and put it into a bowl. Right before the water begins to boil, pour just small amount into the bowl. Using a whisk- briskly until a foam begins to form. Then you can add additional boiling water. Once you have the tea ready, you can add your choice of milk and sweetener. I like taking the dairy-free and naturally sweetened route by using unsweetened coconut milk and honey. I’m all about frothy warm beverages, I use my milk frother when I make lattes. You can also heat the almond milk on the stove top or zap it in the microwave – just be sure it doesn’t come to a boil.

  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 teaspoon matcha powder
  • 2 teaspoons pure honey
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk steamed or heated


  1. Begin to boil the water, just before the water begins to boil- pour a small amount into a bowl with the matcha powder
  2. Whisk the matcha powder quickly until a foam appears
  3. Pour foamy matcha into your mug + additional hot water and sweetener and stir.
  4. Heat the unsweetened coconut milk by either microwaving it, heating it on the stove top, or using a milk frother. (don’t let it boil!)
  5. Add the hot milk to the mug with the matcha mixture, give it a stir, and enjoy!
